Quote I’ve been pondering “Even if you’re on the right track, you’ll get run over if you just sit there.”Will Rogers

LinkedIn Hashtags – Hashtags # on LinkedIn aren’t really like other social platforms. It can be confusing on how best to use them, what’s trending and whether to even bother. Well, thankfully Andy Foote of Linkedinsights.com has not just created a list of the top 100, he’s even sharing a tool you can use to see the top 170 trending #’s. This can give you even more help on deciding which ones to use. If you’re considering using highly popular hashtags, don’t assume it’ll get you more views however. I’ve been doing my own mini experiments. My conclusion so far that #’s with millions of followers are not generating more views. Niche ones directly related to content, with less followers are. One thing to note if you’re the type who’s # tag happy, 3 hashtags on LinkedIn is the magic number.

Browser extensions you need – I’ve moved from Firefox as my main browser to Google Chrome (mainly for translate reasons). With this I’m discovering some great extensions (some of which are on Firefox too).  Hootsuite has shared a list of the best 15 chrome extensions for social media marketers and it’s a list not just useful for social media marketers. Take a look, I particularly love No. 5, as working with people across timezones is now made easier with Figure It Out.

How Amazon Prime day gets you to buy – In How Amazon Prime Day uses your psychology to get you to buy  Yahoo gives an insightful perspective (backed up by research) on how Amazon rules the world with its Prime day offerings. I’m mixed on Prime day, I like that it’s there for those who can’t afford luxury items without it, though I’m not a fan of how manipulative the promotions can be on our brains. Interestingly I didn’t even know it was Prime day until my brother sent me a message about the good deals he was getting. I guess not digesting news and rarely using Amazon helps me not succumb.

Generalise, don’t specialise – I’ve been interested in this topic for a while now. I find as I’m maturing, being a specialist in something (e.g. my career choice) is working out because of my thirst for being a generalist. This article by The Guardian is a great read about why focusing too narrowly is bad for us. This sentence is particularly interesting “..I discovered research showing that highly credentialed experts can become so narrow-minded that they actually get worse with experience, even while becoming more confident (a dangerous combination)..”

I hope you have a fantastic weekend doing the things you enjoy with the people you love.

Quote I’m pondering “I’ve been inspired by a shitload of people in my life so if there’s ever anybody that I can inspire, to me that’s a huge gift. To be able to turn that back around.” – Joe Rogan

Most interesting read – Artificial intelligence has solved the ‘magical mystery’ of several Beatles songs. With 76% accuracy, algorithms and machine learning are telling us who did what on some of the greatest songs you’ve ever heard. Check out more at HDSR.

Email like a boss – This graphic from the talented Dani Donovan is helping me become more effective at responding to messages at work. Take a look for yourself, the results aren’t clear for me just yet, though using these terms feels nicer so I’m sticking to them.

Did we land on the moon? – This one has always fascinated me. I’m open minded to everything, working hard not to believe something just because organisations and experts say it’s true. I look at all the evidence. Right now I do believe we landed on the moon, though if evidence in the future shows we didn’t, I’m open to it. The Guardian has published a long form read on the popularity of moon landings being faked. It’s a well written piece whatever you might believe.

New app I’m using – Thanks to a fellow blogger Nick Severson, the Notion app came my way. Currently I’m using it in parallel with Evernote and it’s looking pretty great. It’s got everything you might need in one place – journal, lists and notes. It’s like Trello, Evernote and Asana all in one on steroids. If you have multiple apps for notes, organising, reading lists and journaling take a look at Notion, it’s likely to be something you’ll enjoy trying too.

Quote I’m pondering“Do you love life? Then do not squander time, for that’s the stuff life is made of.” – Benjamin Franklin

Michael Spencer – a prolific writer on Medium has written a terrifically detailed piece about Google research into what makes a great manager. Project Oxygen is well known to many already, yet how Michael distils and breaks down the 10 things Google has discovered is excellent and well worth the read.

Hooray! Malcolm Gladwell is back with Revisionist History season 4, the greatest podcast outside of The Tim Ferriss Show. If you are not already listening to revisionist History then go here right now and change your perspective and get inspired.

Make positivity louderGary Vaynerchuk shared a fantastic message about sharing good. With technology today it’s easy to feel like the loudest people are the most negative. I’m with him on sharing goodness, if you have good please share it too. The world of content needs more good.

Favourite App – I’ve updated my 1Blocker app on my iPhone and it’s better than ever. It’s single handedly the best content blocker I’ve used on my phone and it’s even available for your Mac too. It blocks ads, trackers and more and it’s very customisable too. If you have an Apple device you need 1Blocker.

Quote I’m pondering “Every one of you is a super genius if you just focus your common sense.” –  Eliyahu Goldratt

What I’m reading – Staying with Eli Goldratt, I’ve started reading The Goal again, a book an old friend I used to work with recommended to me years ago. Its overall theme is continuous development and Eli was the person who introduced the Theory of Constraints.  It’s a fantastic book I recommend and interestingly it’s written like a novel, so not your usual business book. A great summary can be found at Forbes.com.

Planting seeds of Happiness – My wife watched a TED talk from Malene Rydahl recently and thought I’d like it too, it’s terrific. We’ve been in Denmark for a year now and our children are blossoming more than we imagined. Malene easily explains the 3 human values behind this happiness. They are Trust, Freedom to be you & Finding purpose. I highly recommend watching her 16 minute TED talk, it’s entertaining and mind blowing. If you make the choices suggested, it could change your life and those around you significantly.

Most interesting internet read – According to Inc.com Microsoft studied what was making employees miserable in its Surface and Xbox teams. It found 1 thing that it now coaches all managers on. That thing is the number of people attending a meeting. This wasn’t my experience while at Xbox in the UK, yet it’s still great advice for anyone who manages teams.

Favourite purchase – My family and I live in a wonderful place near a forest. It’s peaceful and only 30 minutes from the centre of Copenhagen by tain. The only downside so far, is that while the sun rises at 3:30am the birds begin to sing and I mean really sing! It’s a wonderful sound, hearing the early bird chorus, yet between the hours of 3:30am and 6am it’s also disturbing and keeps me awake. So when the birds start, I roll over and put in Macks earplugs, they’re amazing. If you’re looking for an earplug solution where you can’t feel them while sleeping (even on your side), then try Macks (I use the pillow soft ones).
