Quote I’m pondering“Because in the end, you won’t remember the time you spent working in the office or mowing your lawn. Climb that goddamn mountain.” ― Jack Kerouac

Poem I’m enjoyingUniverse – One Song: Continuing with Jack Kerouac, this article on Brainpickings is a fantastic snapshot of Jack’s kindness with one of his ex lovers. She wrote the poem and found it again decades after his death.

What I’m learningLessons for LinkedIn sharing – 5 important points to consider, like oversharing, sharing without a comment and posting low quality posts. All of which can result in your post not getting seen. Whether you post daily on LinkedIn or hardly at all, you’ll want to read this one by Adrian Dayton.

Staying with LinkedIn – I’m pondering the one thing that Bill Gates does to stand out on LinkedIn. Have a look, it’s simple enough for all of us to consider.

Music for productivity – I’ve been listening to the soundtrack to Simcity. I’ve been using Powerpoint and Excel a lot recently, and I’m finding Simcity music is increasing my productivity in an open office setting. Try it for yourself, it’s a great set of tunes.

Quote I’m ponderingHere’s to strong women, May we know them. May we be them. May we raise them.” – Unknown

International Women’s day – David Wiseman wrote a great quick read on LinkedIn for International Women’s day. He highlights an interesting response for when men ask “Why is there no Men’s Day?” That’s because every other day of the year is International Men’s Day.”

Some thoughts on life: A friend forwarded me this piece on Life, laughter, love and the gaping hole left in our collective sense of humour. In it the author states “Right now, too many people are trying to be like Elon Musk and Steve Jobs, but not enough of them are trying to be like John Candy.” I think he’s right and hope you agree. Let’s all be more like John Candy.

“I wish I could go to more meetings,” said no one, ever. – The author of a new book, The Surprising Science of Meetings, has been interviewing over the last few months and this interview is a wonderful insightful on workplace meetings.  In it you’ll see research based ideas on improving meetings, why we need them and how to avoid the ones you don’t need.

For those of you with a WSJ account, he has a great article here also.

Personal brand – I’m thinking about my ‘brand’ more as I’m reading Career Distinction . I’m not sold on seeing myself as a brand, yet I understand it’s somewhat inevitable within a modern workplace. The Marketoonist has a short funny article on personal branding which has me thinking. You can read it here: Marketoonist .Have you thought about your own personal branding?

Have a great weekend everyone!

Quote I’m pondering this week “If you can see yourself as an artist, and you can see that your life is your own creation, then why not create the most beautiful story for yourself?”Miguel Ruiz

Favourite new TV ShowNew Amsterdam . If you liked West Wing, Newsroom or even The Night Shift then this is going be something you enjoy. I’m learning new management techniques like I did when I first watched The West Wing. It’s entertaining, thought provoking and interesting.

LinkedIn hacksThese 8 clever hacks are worth reviewing. I’ve already tweaked my connect button along with my reach out to me text. If you use LinkedIn at least once a day, then these will be good for you.

How successful people remain calmThese 10 strategies got me thinking a lot this week. I’m constantly working on negative self talk and ‘what if’ as areas that hold me back. Have a look at this list, if there is anything here you can work on it could help you have better days.

I like this quote from the article, as it frames how much we can control our own stress:

“Fortunately, though, unless a lion is chasing you, the bulk of your stress is subjective and under your control”

Alan Partridge is back at the BBC! Alan who? if you don’t know, then check out I’m Alan Partridge, one of the best TV shows to end the 1990’s. I liked the letter he wrote to the BBC this week as part of it’s marketing campaign..

Enjoy your weekend!

Quote I’m pondering this week “Do your little bit of good where you are; it’s those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world.” – Desmond Tutu

Remember the film Office Space? A film that still makes sense today, despite the fact it’s aged a little. In amongst its humour, it has valuable lessons for anyone working for a tech company today, this Guardian summary highlights it well.

Stream music? I use Apple Music, more for convenience than anything else. I prefer the merging of tech. Most people I know use Spotify. If you use, or plan to use Spotify, take a look at this article in Rolling Stone. I’ve pre-ordered the book, it sounds fascinating.

What made me think hard about democracy? The author of Sapiens wrote an amazing piece late last year.

“If we understood that our desires are not the outcome of free choice, we would hopefully be less preoccupied with them” – Yuval Noah Harari

Brexit still looms, and for many it’s about immigration. The reality is it’s steering the UK away from a framework. One that’s given it peace for longer than any other time in its history. Anyone who lives in the UK or is interested in Brexit might be interested in reading this: My grandfather was a Nazi. I’ve seen why we need the EU.
