5 Share – 13th Oct 2017

It’s share time! Specifically 5 share time, where you (lovely readers) get 5 unbelievably life changing snippets of information to brighten your weekend and life*, it should also help stop any bad luck on Friday 13th**

*I hope **Not based on fact

1. Quote I’m pondering this week “For the first 30 years of your life, you make your habits. For the last 30 years of your life, your habits make you.” – From a Steve Jobs interview with Playboy magazine in 1985. This has me thinking about growth mindset and how I’ve been able to overcome some of the habits from my first 30 years. It takes some doing though I truly believe our minds are elastic.

2. Most profound read this week is the above mentioned interview with Steve Jobs: http://reprints.longform.org/playboy-interview-steve-jobs I sat in a restaurant and read the interview on my phone, it took an hour to read and digest and I ate my whole meal and drank half a bottle of wine at the same time. It’s a fantastic piece and will remain with me forever (book marked in my Evernote). I highly recommend making the time as it’s insightful and incredibly wise.

3. TV show I’m watching – This week my wife and I began watching season 2 of Designated Survivor: https://www.netflix.com/dk-en/title/80113647 an incredibly compelling show that like the West Wing has one of the best presidents the USA could ever have (this one is played by Kiefer Sutherland). I learned about great leadership in my late 20’s from watching the West Wing, now I’m upgrading myself by watching Kiefer play one of the greatest leaders on the screen at the moment – watch it too and get better.

4. A random Google search I did this week for the X files brought up a snippet from a book published many years ago. The book details a published magazine article where I explained how to get on the set of the X files in Vancouver (I actually did this and spent time with Gillian Anderson). I’m including here just because I’m still proud: https://books.google.co.uk/books=fancultures

5. A friend shared this satirical unofficial TED talk with me a couple of weeks back: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ZBKX-6Gz6A and I watched it again recently. It’s hilarious and also has elements of how one can actually present with impact. Worth watching for smiles and lessons.

6 October 2017

It’s that time again, where you get more wisdom than you find in a classroom (maybe elementary more than University…) It’s later than usual as I’ve been away enjoying the British countryside this week, back on track next Friday, enjoy!

1. Quote I’m pondering this week – “All leaders must have two things: they must have a vision of the world that does not exist and they must have the ability to communicate it.” – Simon Sinek

2. Cryptocurrency is fascinating and a few weeks ago I took part in the pre sale of this ICO (initial coin offering) Genesis Vision, it’s interesting to me as not only have they received certification from the financial commission, they have spread out their ICO offering so that people have the chance to take part. Check out their website and make your own mind up.

3. A favourite dish in the Purvis household for a while now has been Bouddha bowl, thanks to the Buddha chef for this one. It’s truly delicious and highly nutrious, I’ve been craving this one all week and have just finished eating it, find it here: https://www.thebuddhistchef.com/recipe/bouddha-bowl/

4. Product I’ve been enjoying – Connecta baby is one of the greatest baby wearing products I’ve used. My wife baby wears and has some lovely slings and wraps though I find throwing on the Connecta easy as I don’t need to learn the art of wrapping. It receives rave reviews all over the internet and can be used for older toddlers too, check them out here: https://www.connectababycarrier.com/

5. Book I’m reading – Hit Refresh: Satya Nadella – an inspiring and really well written (lovely to read as it’s compelling and flows well) book about Satya’s journey and his leading the reinvention within Microsoft. Check it out here: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/30835567-hit-refresh

29th September 2017

It’s Friday again and another 5 gems of important information that will enhance your life (or send you to sleep, let’s hope for enhancement).

1. Quote I’m pondering this week “If you want to be successful, find someone who has achieved the results you want and copy what they do and you’ll achieve the same results.” – Tony Robbins

2. I’ve been drinking a pint of water and freshly squeezed lemon juice first thing in the morning for years now, it revitalises and hydrates me immediately. In the last few weeks I’ve been adding a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar, I’m enjoying the results; more energy, recovering from a cold quicker than usual and feeling cleansed, try it!

3. I’m reading Principles by Ray Dalio, Ray Dalio is an inspiration and if you don’t know who he is, look him up. I’ve not finished it yet though it’s already in my top 5 favourite books of all time, it’s going to be my most gifted book over the next few years, what a gem.

4. I watched this TED talk this week and it’s really made me think about how we can be more open and transparent in the work place. A worthy 16 minute watch!

5. I journal using the 5 minute journal, and I’ve wanted to try ‘morning pages’ for a while now as I hear so much about it. This week I started and it’s amazing, the feeling of just writing it down sets me up for the day and clears my brain. I’m finding I can have deeper conversations and focus better. I think this is down to jotting down so much in the morning so my mind isn’t racing through it all as the day goes on. Check it out, it’s a fav of many successful people.

22nd September 2017

What a week it’s been, I’m looking forward to some downtime before I initiate a big change in my life, I’ve booked a few days here: http://www.kidsloveyurts.co.uk/ where there is no wifi and we’re planning on not using technology for anything other than phone calls / msgs and maps.

1. Quote that’s helped me stay tuned in on any aches and pains I have: “Do not complain about growing old, it’s a privilege denied to many” – Mark Twain. I don’t hear much about Mark Twain nowadays, he’s one of the greatest American writers in history so it’s a shame. His humour and entrepreneurship are inspiring and this quote has helped me make sure I’m grateful even during the hardest of times

2. TED talks have been a bit overhyped for me recently, though I found this one on gaining control of time and the 2 simple actions she gives (I won’t spoil it, watch the vid) have already started to make a difference, it’s unmissable.

3. On the subject of time, you may remember a while ago my talk about the Pomodoro technique. Well I’ve been using this website for a while now and highly recommend it: https://tomato-timer.com/

4. My son Mack has started school for the first time and in order to keep his system up for coping with all the disease and germs I’ve found this great tasting breakfast smoothie, a good way to get greens into you and any kids you may have: 1 cup unsweetened almond milk – 1 cup frozen berries – 1 banana, peeled – 2 cups kale, ribs removed, coarsely chopped – 1/2 cup pitted and coarsely chopped medjool dates.

5. A friend shared this link about successful people and compound time, it’s an inspiring read and I’ve been able to cross reference many of the actions with ones I’ve implemented for myself, giving me confidence that what feels good is actually good for me, check it out.
